Theme: “Sustainable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources for Power System Development”

 Background 

Globally there has been an increase in the deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) in the form of renewable energy generation and microgrids. This technology presents a unique opportunity for power system development due to its low emissions, scalability, short construction time frames and diversifying the energy supply.

Grid integration of DER can present challenges, be it during planning, construction or operation. The 9^th CIGRE Southern Africa regional conference will provide a platform to deliberate on sustainable integration of distributed energy resources for power system development. These discussions will be between electric utilities, system operators, regulators, manufacturers and suppliers, universities, standardizing bodies, research laboratories and authorities on topics in the field of development of electrical systems in Africa.

This regional conference will be held in conjunction with the 2019 CIGRE SC B4 Colloquium, from the 1^st October to the 4^th October 2019 at the Misty Hills Country Hotel, Conference Centre & Spa, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Preferential Subjects

Papers related to the application of distributed energy resources and microgrids across all study committees are invited. Preference will be given to submissions in the fields of technology, planning, operations and markets as well as actual project and operational experience with focus on the following subjects:

• Integration on DER within Transmission and Distribution networks
• Energy storage technologies
• Regional interconnections solutions
• Electricity infrastructure resilience
• Impact of distributed generation on existing equipment performance
• Impact of distributed generation on power system protection schemes
• Improvements in electricity access in Africa and developing countries
• Environmental impact of the deployment of DER and microgrids
• Cybersecurity
• Telecommunications
