SUMMARY:CIGRESA 12th Regional Conference 2025 Registration Open
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 CIGRE Southern Africa Regional Conference will be held from 14 to 17 October 2025 at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria.\nClick Here for Final Conference Programme\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER\nConference Theme: “Changes required for a sustainable power system in the energy transition in Africa”\nRecent amendments to South Africa’s Electricity Regulation Act have highlighted the dramatic shifts in the country’s energy landscape. The African continent and the international energy sector as a whole are undergoing substantial structural changes. These changes necessitate urgent action in three key areas: technological innovation\, regulatory reform\, and environmental considerations. Such measures are necessary in order to create an environment conducive to a sustainable power system that can meet the growing demand for electricity. \nMoreover\, this energy transition has to be achieved while balancing multiple objectives: decarbonizing the sector to combat climate change\, ensuring equitable access to clean energy\, and fostering new economic opportunities within the industry. This conference will provide a platform to attendees\, from the region and beyond\, to deliberate on subjects that expand on how we can build\, transform\, and adapt a sustainable power system in the energy transition on the continent. \nThe discussions and knowledge exchange at this conference will be between industry stakeholders: electric utilities (generation/transmission/ distribution)\, regional power pools\, municipalities\, system operators\, regulators\, policy makers manufacturers and suppliers\, universities\, standardizing bodies\, research laboratories and other authorities in the field of the development of electrical systems\, primarily in Africa\, with a global perspective. \nPreferential Subjects\nPapers across all study committees have been invited and preference were given to submissions in the fields of technology\, planning\, operations and markets as well as those covering actual project and operational experiences with focus on the following subjects: \nTechnology Changes \n\n\n\nData-Driven Power Grids: Solutions for a Sustainable Grid\nTechnological advancements for renewable energy integration\nGrid stability and resilience\n\n\n\nRegulatory Changes \n\n\n\nMarkets and consumer behavior\nEnergy policy and regulations\nTariff re-structuring and energy sector reform\n\n\n\nDecarbonization & Climate Change \n\n\n\nEnergy efficiency and sustainability\nEnvironmental changes for new grids\nJust Energy Transition\nGrid security in the face of climate change and intermittent generation\n\n\n\nContacts \n\n\n\nOrganizing Committee Lead: Sharon Mushabe (arigyes@ntcsa.co.za)\nTechnical Committee Lead: Jana Breedt (breedtjn@ntcsa.co.za)\nEnquiries / Registration: Anelja de Bok (anelja@activecapture.co.za)

SUMMARY:Webinar: Study Committees B4 and C4 The GPT without reactive power offers optimal power system efficiency!
DESCRIPTION:The GPT without reactive power offers optimal power system efficiency! \nScope: The General Power Theory (GPT) challenges fundamental aspects of power engineering and existing power theories. Based on a two-part paper in recent editions of Cigre Science and Engineering\, and papers and discussion contributions at the Cigre Paris Session 2024\, this webinar offers a summary of the GPT’s development\, testing\, and applications. The experimental test results of implementing GPT control in three different power electronic converters demonstrate that optimal system performance can be achieved without a concept of reactive power. The GPT has significant implications for the electrical power industry worldwide in aspects as broad as converter control\, grid codes\, tariffs\, and understanding and mitigating the effects of geomagnetically induced currents. \nPresenters:  Trevor Gaunt\, B.Sc.Eng. (Natal)\, M.B.L. (South Africa)\, Ph.D. (Cape Town)\, FSAIEE\, is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering\, University of Cape Town. He was Principal Investigator on research funded by the Open Philanthropy Project on the mitigation of effects of geomagnetically induced currents in power systems\, and on UCT’s Advanced GPT Inverter Demonstration project.  He is a Cigre member. \nPitambar Jankee\, B.Sc.Eng. M.Sc.Eng.\, Ph.D. (Cape Town)\, MIEEE.  His thesis focussed on the implementation of GPT control of power electronic converters and the testing using Hardware-In-the-Loop and in real labs. He has worked with Solution Station in Cape Town and at Ario MeTapower in Pretoria. In April 2024\, he joined the Battery Energy Storage Department of Siemens Energy in Erlangen\, Germany. His research interests include power-electronic converter control\, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) applications\, power theory\, geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) and power systems stability. He is a Cigre NGN member. \nMeeting Details \nPlease join my meeting from your computer\, tablet or smartphone. \nhttps://meet.goto.com/345537421 \nYou can also dial in using your phone.\n(For supported devices\, tap a one-touch number below to join instantly.) \nFrance: +33 430 001 241\n– One-touch: tel:+33430001241\,\,345537421# \nAccess Code: 345-537-421 \nJoin from a video-conferencing room or system.\nDial in or type: 67.217.95.2 or inroomlink.goto.com\nMeeting ID: 345 537 421\nOr dial directly: 345537421@67.217.95.2 or 67.217.95.2##345537421

SUMMARY:9TH CIGRE Southern Africa Regional Conference
DESCRIPTION:Theme: “Sustainable Integration of Distributed Energy Resources for Power System Development”\n Background   \nGlobally there has been an increase in the deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) in the form of renewable energy generation and microgrids. This technology presents a unique opportunity for power system development due to its low emissions\, scalability\, short construction time frames and diversifying the energy supply. \nGrid integration of DER can present challenges\, be it during planning\, construction or operation.
